How To Stay In Love

I’m a hopeless romantic.  My mom once said to me, “you are in love with love.”  Indeed, she was right.  Unfortunately, this has led to some heart breaks for me and, I’m ashamed to say, for the other person:(  It’s easy to fall in love, the challenge is to stay in love.  After many years of life and learning, I think I have found my secret to staying in love.

One of the things that’s really important is to enjoy sharing everyday life with the one you love.  A tradition that my fiance’ and I have is to go to our favorite breakfast spot at least 1-2 times a week, or the Waffle House if I’m starving😂  We don’t even chat a lot, we simply enjoy each others company.

Here is our favorite romantic breakfast spot.

Abita Roasting co.  504 Water St. Madisonville, Louisiana

We always get the same thing every time.  I love their scrambled eggs and muffin top!  I was reading Throne of Glass on my Kindle. I’m a bit of a sci-fi nerd.

FullSizeRender (11)The friendly service here and the atmosphere, and of course the delicious food, is what keeps us coming back:)

💓The real secret I’ve found to staying in love is being able to laugh together.  I’m in 100% agreement with Audrey Hepburn who said,

I love people who make me laugh. I honestly think it’s the thing I like most, to laugh. It cures a multitude of ills. It’s probably the most important thing in a person.

It seemed like my man and me needed a good dose of fun today, so when he went out on an errand, here’s what I did… hehe;)

FullSizeRender (10)OMG, it was so much FUN!!  When I saw his car pulling up I quickly hid in the pantry closet and tried my darndest not to laugh.  When he came in the door, the game was on!  I think I laughed the whole time we were firing at each other.  Needless to say, I’m the dishwasher tonight;) LOL.  But it was so worth it!

Our Wedding Day

donnatalie100

I’ve always dreamed of being married outside so this time around I was excited to plan a romantic beach wedding.  I couldn’t wait to say our vows with the sun setting behind the emerald blue waters of the Gulf of Mexico. The week of our wedding that vision came to a squeaky halt when the rains came in and it didn’t stop!

I went back and forth between disappointment and hope.  I finally accepted that Mother Nature can’t be stopped and that I needed to get a grip on my perception of things.  Instead of fighting against the circumstances I decided to embrace the rain and make the best of it!

It would be fun kissing in the rain!  LOL  We could get a picture like the sexy one from the movie Notebook where Allie and Noah kiss in the pouring rain:)

I was about to get blue rain boots and white umbrellas, but my man stopped me!  That was a bit much whimsy for him;)  In my quest to find the silver lining I discovered the superstition that rain on your wedding day is good luck!

Superstitions of rainy wedding days:
  • It symbolizes cleansing from sadness in your past.
  • When you “tie the knot” on a rainy day is signifies that your marriage will last.  This is because a knot that becomes wet is very hard to untie.
  • Rain signifies washing away of bad memories or occurrences.  The gift in this is that you get a completely new, fresh chapter in your life.

Don and I have both been through a lot so these beautiful thoughts resonated with me.

The good news is that we had the luck of the rain without getting rained on!  The hour of our ceremony the rains stopped.😀  It was perfect and all about us.

When you’re older, you’ve been through things, you’ve made mistakes. So you come into it (a second marriage) still giddy, but wanting it to last.  -Nicole Kidman

Sometimes it takes a heartbreak to shake us awake, at least it did for me.  I have found that everything that I went through makes me appreciate my husband and our life together even more.

In our ceremony our wedding officiant, Ken, had us take a moment to talk about our wishes. We then threw our seashells into the giant wishing well.  Afterwards I got hoisted off my feet and the games were on! LOL

Not exactly the Notebook scene, but we sure did a lot of kissing that day and still do!❤️

Some things really are better the second time around.

Secret To A Passionate Relationship

A lifetime of intimacy and attraction in your relationship is possible, and the secret lies in being physical together.  FYI, I’m not just talking about in the bedroom.

A recent survey by Vouchercloud revealed that 85% of couples who exercise together believe that it improved their relationships. Some couples went so far as to say training together “saved the relationship altogether.”

Jamey and Brenda Bertrand have been married 19 years, and they’ve always had a strong physical connection that was further strengthened by working out together.

Grow Your Bond

Brenda was somewhat active in high school and not as into exercising when her and Jamey met. Whereas Jamey was more into his workouts and wanted to share that part of his life with her.  In time she came to appreciate his help, and it brought them closer.

When you workout together you get to see another side of each other that is very appealing. You witness each other push through physical limitations and reach personal records.

Jamey shared how satisfying it has been for him to get to motivate his spouse into reaching levels that she thought she could never attain. “The smile they give you when they do accomplish goals are priceless.”

Attraction and Desire Never Diminishes

A lot of couples get caught up in the rat race of life with career, busy schedules, and having kids which can cause their sex lives to suffer.

Jamey and Brenda’s desire for one another has never worn off even with the raising of two daughters and the realities of life.

We have never experienced a drop in our sexual desire towards each other.  We both never let the raising our children effect that part of the relationship. We always made at least one day of the week to take a date or have some sort of romantic evening.

Exercising alone increases your endorphins, add to that an improved self-esteem from being in shape and you will experience a serious increase in sexual desire.

When you look like this it’s easy to understand how physical fitness enhances the relationship:)

Quality Time Together

According to Psychology Today, ‘When work and other obligations take over the schedule, finding ways to keep your relationship a priority can make a difference.’

You don’t have to be exercise fanatics.  Jamey says that “Brenda is not the work out demon girl. Lol.  She enjoys going 2-3 times a week . No more than that. I’m just happy she does work out hard in those 3 days and we get to do it together.”

When you workout together you are spending time with one another and sharing a purpose that will last even when the kids are gone and you retire.

They both enjoy outside activities such as riding mountain bikes together or a slow jog around the LSU lakes.  Jamey says, “It’s gets the daily stress out of our systems.”

Nurture With Massages

One of the fun perks of working out together is that you both understand and appreciate receiving a good massage.  Jamey does a lot of running so needless to say, his feet are pretty calloused and sore.  Brenda gives him foot manicures and massages.  He in turn gives her neck and shoulder messages to help melt away her stress and workout the knots.

A Life of Love and Freedom

The driving motivation for this couple is that they want to grow very old with each other.  They want to enjoy life and be able to function in their retirement age.  Jamey expressed that “only staying fit and healthy will we be able to achieve those great experiences such as traveling the world and going to exciting places in our retirement days.”

In honor of Valentine’s Day and a lifetime of passionate love, make an effort this weekend to get in a sweaty workout with your Sweetheart.

Healthy Treats For A Halloween Bash

Dressing up for Halloween never gets old even for us grown ups!  It can be hard for me to come up with costume ideas, but while we were watching the Underworld series I thankfully found my inspiration:)  I have always teasingly referred to my guy as my ‘Wolf Man,’ so Little Red Riding Hood and the Big Bad Wolf sounded like the perfect couples costumes! LOL

I believe play is just as pivotal for adults as it is for kids.  Play brings joy. And it’s vital for problem solving, creativity and relationships.  If you are being told you are a fuddy duddy, you need to loosen up or that you’re too serious then it sounds like you are past due for some good old-fashioned PLAY!  I have to admit, I had so much fun getting us ready for a Halloween Bash at my friend’s house.  I’m by no means crafty or a make-up artist, but I didn’t let that stop me from throwing some make-up on my Wolf Man and making my cape with glue:)

I’ve been realizing the idea that we don’t have to be perfect to create something.  If we have a desire and want to create something then we need to do that. I love this quote by Elizabeth Gilbert,

The point is not for you to do something that’s never been done before. The point is for you to do something you’ve never done before.

I hope you find joy in creating just for the sheer play and fun that it bring you.

Here are some of my original and not so original “Little Red Riding Hood” treats I took to a Halloween Bash.  I wasn’t sure how these healthy treats would go over, but I took them anyway and everyone seemed to enjoy them:)

Pumpkin Spice Energy Ball

Image (5) Image (4)

*recipe by Dani Spies http://cleananddelicious.com/2014/09/30/pumpkin-spice-energy-balls/

Ingredients:

  • ¼ cup almond butter
  • ¼ cup pumpkin puree
  • ½ cup almond flour
  • 1 tbsp. real maple syrup *I used a TBS stevia
  • 1 tbsp. chia seed
  • 1 tsp. pumpkin pie spice
  • Pinch of kosher salt
  • 1.5 ounces dark chocolate *depending on mood, I omit this and add cacao nibs

Directions:

In a large bowl combine almond butter, pumpkin puree, almond flour, maple syrup, chia seeds, pumpkin pie spice, and kosher salt.  Mix until everything is well incorporated.

Scoop up about 1 tbsp. of ‘dough’ and roll in the palm of your hands to create a small, golf-sized ball.  You should get about 8 balls.

Place the balls on a plate lined with parchment paper in the freezer while you melt your chocolate.

Set up a double boiler (see example in this video).  Add two ounces of dark chocolate and stir periodically until the chocolate has melted down.

Remove the pumpkin balls from the freezer and dip each one in the chocolate to coat half of the pumpkin ball.  Place back on the parchment paper and continue until you have dipped all the pumpkin balls.

Place them back in the freezer and enjoy any time you need a quick and delicious nutrient packed snack.

Makes 8 balls.

  1. Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F and lightly grease with cooking spray.
  2. Mix together: eggs, vanilla, yogurt, sugar until combined.
  3. Stir in the flour, salt and baking soda & baking powder until just combined. Add the oats, quinoa, and coconut.
  4. Add the wet ingredients to the dry and gently stir in the chocolate chips.
  5. Use a spoon or cookie scoop to scoop the dough into 2-3 tablespoon-sized portions. Bake for 8-10 minutes until the bottoms are browned but the insides are still nice and soft. If you want a thinner cookie (instead of puffy), flatten slightly before baking.
